Roads & Safety

A safe, reliable and well-connected transport network is essential to the liveability and productivity of Melbourne’s east.

Roads & Safety

A safe, reliable and well-connected transport network is essential to the liveability and productivity of Melbourne’s east.

The Eastern Transport Coalition (ETC) advocates for strategic investment in roads, pedestrian infrastructure and public transport safety improvements that support growing communities, reduce congestion and help people move around safely and confidently.

As Melbourne’s east continues to grow, transport infrastructure must keep pace with increasing demand and changing travel patterns. ETC works with all levels of government to ensure our communities have access to transport networks that are safe, efficient and fit for purpose.

Roads & Road Infrastructure

Roads remain a critical part of Melbourne’s transport network, supporting freight movement, public transport services, business activity and everyday travel.

ETC advocates for targeted investment in road infrastructure that improves network efficiency, relieves congestion and supports the movement of people and goods across the region.

Our priorities include:

  • Upgrades to key arterial roads and transport corridors.
  • Improvements to major intersections and congestion hotspots.
  • Projects that support freight efficiency and economic productivity.
  • Better integration between road, bus, rail and active transport networks.
  • Long-term planning to ensure transport infrastructure keeps pace with population growth.

By investing in strategic road infrastructure, governments can improve reliability, reduce travel times and support stronger economic outcomes for communities across Melbourne’s east.

Pedestrian Safety

Walking is an important part of almost every journey. Whether people are accessing public transport, schools, shops,
workplaces or recreational facilities, safe pedestrian infrastructure helps create healthier and more
connected communities.ETC supports investment in:

Safer pedestrian crossings and intersection upgrades

Improved connectivity between neighbourhoods, activity centres and public transport.

Upgraded footpaths and shared user path connections.

Better lighting and accessibility improvements.

Walkable communities that encourage active and sustainable travel.

Creating safer environments for pedestrians helps improve liveability, supports healthier lifestyles and makes it easier for people of all ages and abilities to move around their communities.

Safety on Public Transport

Everyone should feel safe using public transport, regardless of when or where they travel.

ETC recognises that safety concerns can discourage people from using trains, buses and other public transport services, particularly during off-peak periods and at night. Improving both actual and perceived safety is essential to increasing patronage and delivering a more accessible transport network.

ETC advocates for a range of public transport safety initiatives, including:

  • Improved lighting at stations, stops and transport interchanges.
  • Expanded CCTV coverage across the network.
  • Emergency help points and safety infrastructure upgrades.
  • Increased frontline staff and safety personnel.
  • Better station and stop design that improves visibility and passive surveillance.
  • Measures that support safer journeys for women, older people and vulnerable passengers.

A safer public transport network encourages greater use of public transport, improves community confidence and helps deliver a more connected and sustainable Melbourne.

Our Vision

ETC believes Melbourne’s east deserves a transport system that is safe, connected and responsive to community needs.

Through ongoing advocacy, research and engagement with government, ETC will continue to champion practical transport solutions that improve road safety, protect vulnerable road users and create a safer experience across the entire transport network.
